Is ColdFusion Secure? Debunking Common Security Myths

← Back to Blog

ColdFusion has a reputation problem when it comes to security — often based on high-profile breaches from years-old, unpatched systems rather than the platform itself. Here's a clearer picture of what's actually true.

Where the reputation comes from

Most publicized ColdFusion security incidents involve applications running old, unpatched versions of the server — sometimes years behind on updates — with default configurations left unchanged since installation. These are operational failures, not proof that CFML is inherently insecure.

The vulnerabilities that actually show up

In real-world ColdFusion applications, the recurring issues are the same ones found in any web stack:

  • SQL injection — from string-concatenated queries instead of parameterized cfqueryparam tags.
  • Cross-site scripting (XSS) — from unescaped user input rendered directly in output.
  • CSRF — from forms and actions without token validation.
  • Insecure file uploads — accepting and executing untrusted file types.
  • Weak session management — long-lived, predictable, or improperly scoped session tokens.

Every one of these is preventable with current CFML language features and is no different from the same risks in PHP, Java, or Node.js applications built carelessly.

What secures a ColdFusion application

  • Keeping the ColdFusion/Lucee engine on a current, patched version.
  • Using cfqueryparam for all database queries.
  • Validating and encoding all user input and output.
  • Enforcing HTTPS, secure cookies, and short session timeouts.
  • Regular dependency and configuration audits.

The real risk factor: old, unmaintained applications

The honest answer is that ColdFusion itself is no more or less secure than any comparable platform — but the average age of ColdFusion applications in production is higher than average, which means more of them were built before current security practices were standard. That's a maintenance problem, not a language problem, and it's exactly what a security audit is designed to fix.

I offer ColdFusion security audits to identify and fix vulnerabilities before they become incidents.
